Where to Propose on the Isle of Wight
There are easier things to plan than a proposal, and the setting carries more of the weight than people expect. Get it right and the story tells itself for the rest of your lives. The Isle of Wight, as it happens, is built for it — the water, the light, the sense of having slipped somewhere quieter than the mainland.
The sunset over the Solent
The simplest ideas are usually the best ones. The sea-view terrace at RT Café Grill faces due west across the Solent, and on a clear evening the sunset here is as good as anywhere in the country. A table by the window, or a drink on the terrace as the light goes — oysters, a glass of something cold, the ferries crossing.
No fuss, no staging. Just the water and the question. If you'd like us to have a glass of Champagne ready at the right moment, tell us when you book and we'll make it quiet and seamless.
The private room
If the idea of doing it in a busy room fills you with dread, take it downstairs. The Cellar is two private dining rooms beneath the restaurant, each looking into the wine cellar — candlelit, entirely your own, and away from the crowd. You can have the room to yourselves, choose a bespoke menu with the kitchen, and take the whole evening at your own pace.
It's designed for the occasions that matter. A proposal sits comfortably at the top of that list.
The full occasion: Thompson's
For the couple who want the evening itself to be the event, there's Thompson's — chef Robert Thompson's tasting menu, served in The Cellar across a handful of evenings each year. Several courses, each one considered, the menu released a month in advance. It's the most complete dining experience on the island, and it turns a proposal into a night neither of you forgets.
Dates are limited and released ahead, so book early and let us know it's a special one.
The morning after
However the evening goes — and it goes well — there's the small matter of the next morning. Come back for breakfast on the terrace, ring is on, and let the news settle in over coffee and the view. We're open from 9am, Tuesday to Sunday.
Making it happen
Whatever you choose, tell us it's a proposal when you book. We do this more often than you'd think, and the difference is in the details — the right table, the timing, a glass ready at the moment, and staff who know to give you the room. None of it costs extra. It's just how we'd want it done for someone we cared about.
